The Space You Already Own
Most houses are carrying square footage that nobody uses — the wall either side of a chimney breast, the dead corner of a bedroom, the run of hallway that is too narrow for furniture, the void under the stairs. Built-ins are how that space starts earning. We have turned a spare room into a two-person office with facing desk runs, filled a great-room opening with arched bookcases either side of the columns, and given a quilter a full work wall with a drop-in sewing well and fabric behind glass.

Trim, Ceilings and the Details Around Them
Millwork is not only cabinetry. It is the crown that ties a built-in into the ceiling, the casing and wainscot that carry its lines around the rest of the room, the columns framing an opening, the beams and tongue-and-groove boards overhead, the mantel and the shiplap behind the television. Doing the cabinet without the trim around it is how a built-in ends up looking like a bookcase somebody pushed against a wall.
Painted, Stained, or Both
Painted shaker and raised-panel doors, natural or stained tops in walnut and oak, glass and mullioned fronts where things are worth looking at, louvered doors where a component needs to breathe, open shelving where it should feel light. Most of our favorite work mixes them — painted casework under a stained top is the pairing clients keep coming back to.
It Should Look Like It Was Always There
That is the whole test. Scribed tight to walls that are not square, profiles matched to the trim already in the house, outlets and switch plates landing where they belong, lighting run inside the shelving rather than clipped on afterwards. And because MJH is a full builder rather than a cabinet shop, we can move the outlet, reframe the opening or drop the soffit instead of designing around it.

Every piece starts from measurements of your room, not from a catalog page. Nothing gets ordered in a stock width and shimmed until the gap stops showing.
Built In, Not Set Against
We frame, scribe and trim the unit into the wall so it reads as part of the house — the difference between a built-in and an expensive bookcase.
Matched to Your Trim
New millwork picks up the crown, base and casing profiles already running through the house, so a new built-in does not announce which decade it arrived in.
Lighting & Power Designed In
Shelf and niche lighting, outlets, switches and component wiring are laid out with the cabinetry rather than added on once the doors are hung.
Storage Sized to Its Contents
